How to play Star Battle

The rules fit on a postcard: one star in every row, column and region, and stars never touch. Every puzzle has exactly one answer you can reach by reasoning. No guessing.

  1. One star in every row, column and region

Each row, each column and each outlined region holds exactly one star. A 5 by 5 board has five stars; a 10 by 10 has ten.

  2. Stars never touch, not even at the corners

A star rules out the eight cells around it. If two stars touch, the board rings them in red.

  3. Tap once for a cross, twice for a star

Crosses are your notes for cells that can’t hold a star. Drag across cells to cross out several at once, and tap a third time to clear a cell.

Learn in a minute

The guide in the app walks you through the rules in four short pages, with an example board that shows each move. The puzzle book opens with small, gentle boards, and its first three puzzles come with free hints, so you can find your feet.

No guessing. Just logic.

Before a puzzle reaches you, a solver checks that it has exactly one answer and that you can get there by reasoning alone.

Stuck? Ask for a hint

A hint highlights the cells that matter and explains the next step in plain words. Read it and carry on, or tap Show me to make that one move. On a gentle board the step might be a region with only one cell; on a fiendish one, a chain of reasoning you can follow line by line.

A real hint, as the game words it The teal region is a single cell, so its star goes there.

The first three puzzles in the book come with free hints. After that, each hint comes after a short ad that you choose to watch, and if no ad loads, you get the hint anyway.

An endless puzzle book

Beyond the daily puzzle, the puzzle book starts with small, gentle 5 by 5 boards and grows chapter by chapter to fiendish 10 by 10s. After its first 150 puzzles, it carries on without end.

Every few puzzles there’s a breather, a little easier than the rest, so the climb never feels like a wall. Puzzles are made on your phone, so the book never runs out.

Fair ads

Quill & Star is free to play, and ads pay for it. Here’s how they work.

  • No ad ever interrupts a puzzle.
  • Your first three puzzles come with no ad breaks, and the first three puzzles in the book come with free hints.
  • After that, a short ad may play between puzzles now and then.
  • A small banner sits at the foot of the menu pages, never on a puzzle.
  • Rewarded ads play only when you ask for one: for a hint, one more try, or a streak freeze. If an ad can’t load, you get the reward anyway.
  • Ads are limited to content suitable for general audiences.

Questions, answered

What is a Star Battle puzzle?

Star Battle is a logic puzzle played on a square grid divided into regions. You place stars so that every row, every column and every region holds exactly one star, and no two stars touch, not even diagonally. In Quill & Star the boards run from 5 by 5 to 10 by 10.

Is Quill & Star free?

Yes. Quill & Star is free to play and supported by ads, with no in-app purchases. No ad ever interrupts a puzzle, your first three puzzles come with no ad breaks, and rewarded ads play only when you ask for one, for a hint, one more try or a streak freeze.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No. There’s no account or sign-up, and puzzles are made on your phone, so you can play without Wi-Fi or any connection. Your progress is saved on your device.

How hard are the puzzles?

The daily puzzle starts the week gentle on a 6 by 6 board and builds to a fiendish 10 by 10 on Sunday. The puzzle book begins with small, gentle 5 by 5 boards and grows to 10 by 10 over its first 150 puzzles, then carries on without end. Grades run Gentle, Moderate, Tough and Fiendish.

What if I get stuck?

Ask for a hint. It highlights the cells that matter and explains the next step in plain words, so you learn the reasoning, not just the answer. The first three puzzles in the book come with free hints; after that, each hint comes after a short ad that you choose to watch, and if no ad loads, you get the hint anyway.

Is there a timer?

There’s a clock if you like to race yourself, and you can hide it in Settings. There’s no time limit. After three mistakes you’re out of ink: you can start over, or watch a short ad for one more try.

When can I download Quill & Star?

Quill & Star is coming soon to the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and to Google Play for Android. This page will link to both stores as soon as it’s out.

What happens to my data?

There’s no sign-up, so the app never asks for your name or email. It sends usage and crash reports to help fix problems, and you can turn them off any time in Settings, under Privacy. Ads are served by Google AdMob, which asks for your consent where the law requires it. The privacy policy has the details.

A note from the maker

I made Quill & Star for the quiet minutes in a day: the first coffee, the ride home, the half hour before sleep. I wanted it to feel like a good puzzle book, the kind that never rushes you, never nags, and never asks who you are.

Every puzzle is checked before you see it, so it has exactly one answer and you can reach it by reasoning. When you ask for help, the hint tells you why, not just where.

The game is free and ads pay for it, so I’ve tried to keep them fair: never in the middle of a puzzle, and the rewarded ones only when you choose.

If something doesn’t work, or you have an idea, write to me at harshitkikani9081@gmail.com. I’d be glad to hear from you.
